Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Explore at your leisure Across Sri Lanka

Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as Lion Rock, is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic historical landmarks. Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains, this ancient rock citadel was built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa. The fortress served as a royal palace and stronghold, strategically designed with advanced urban planning, water gardens, and defensive structures.

At the entrance, visitors pass through the famous Lion Gate, where massive lion paws carved in stone remain as a reminder of its grand past. Halfway up the rock, beautifully preserved frescoes known as the Sigiriya Maidens decorate a sheltered gallery, showcasing ancient Sri Lankan art. The Mirror Wall, once polished to reflect like glass, still bears centuries-old inscriptions.

At the summit, the ruins of the royal palace offer breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding forests and countryside. Today, Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a remarkable symbol of Sri Lanka’s rich history and architectural brilliance.
